To see how much automotive knowledge you have just take this auto maintenance quiz. It is designed for the person who has limited automotive knowledge but wants to learn some of the automotive basics and know what to look for by just seeing the cars symptoms. In some cases you may be able to repair your auto by yourself if you are handy and have a little guidance. Some of the answer choices will be silly but the purpose of this quiz is to get you thinking in the right direction about auto repairs . Remember, this is geared to the average person who only puts gas in the car, kicks the tires and goes on their way. For the rest of you these questions will seem silly, or are they??? Take the quiz Some auto maintenance tips and tricks for repairs that can be done in the backyard such as changing the cars oil and filter, air filter, sparkplugs and wires on most 4 cylinder engines, replacing the drive (fan) belts and just look over the engine in general. Check the transmission fluid for proper level and color. A peek through the wheel with a flashlight can tell how much lining is left on the brake pads. Things to stay away from would be attempting to replace the timing belt. This requires special automotive skills and knowledge. Avoid trying to diagnose an automotive problem related to the “ check engine light “ as this can cause extensive damage to the computer system if not done correctly. Only work on your car if you are sure of what you are doing. I have seen too many people trying to save money by doing their own auto repairs only to spend x$x times more dollars to repair their mistakes before the original problem can be properly diagnosed. Doing automotive electrical diagnose is not as hard as most people think. Check the electrical page for some tips. Use quality tools to avoid rounding off bolt heads and then making it impossible to remove them. Your knuckles will also feel better by using a proper size wrench or socket.
