                          BAD AUTOMOTIVE MISTAKES

These images are the result of a careless "do it yourself person" who in  trying to save money made a bad mistake and ended up    totally ruining their engine. This is a V-6 transverse  engine  and in order to replace the rear spark plugs the top  plenum (mixing) chamber had to be removed. In doing so  this person unknowingly dropped a lock washer into the  intake port.  After the work was completed and the engine was started, this washer found its way into the cylinder and completely destroyed the aluminum piston and cylinder head. The washer also got  jammed under the valve face forcing the valve to stay  open and caused the piston to hit it thus bending the valve.  Other damage included deep  grooves on the cylinder walls  rendering the engine unrepairable from a cost point of  view. If you decide to do this type of work to save money  that’s fine. Just be very careful.

Note how badly damaged the aluminum is.

Many people like to do their own oil changes. This  allows  them to use whatever brand names they choose  for the oil and  filter. It also assures them they are getting  what they pay for.  If  this is what you like to do, more  power to you.  For the most  part these people do a good job except for the one pictured. It seems this person was distracted maybe from a long phone call, or maybe his mother in law got on his nerves, or maybe just a short period lacking in concentration. Never the less he made one serious mistake. He forgot to put the new oil into the engine!! Bad mistake!!  He then drove the car never noticing the gauges until it was too late. This money saver turned into big repair bucks. Doing your own maintenance is fine but be careful and do it right.

Notice top picture a hole in the engine block and crankshaft showing.
Bottom picture is the engine pan and  parts of the connecting rod and other broken parts. Sorry the picture is a little blurry.

This is a picture of extensive engine damage from the timing belt  either breaking from not being replaced in a timely manner or  someone replacing  their own belt without the proper knowledge or  skills.  Note the bent valves on the picture at the very top right.  More detailed  information on this type of  repair at these sites or pages.

Many people come to the shop and complain that  their engine is missing.  Is this what they mean?  Just  kidding, we all know what they mean.  Just needed a  little humor on an expensive bad mistake page.
